Advanced Backgammon Strategies
When you have learned the art of backgammon then it is time to move on to advanced backgammon strategies. For the beginner this can be the simple move that would be second nature to a seasoned backgammon player but you have to take the baby steps before you can walk and this is all in the game of backgammon.
You must know when to leave a shot alone. An example of this would be when your opponent's checker is placed on the bar and you are to leave a blot or a prime. Then it is wise to leave the shot alone. Try to hit your opponent's checker in the away board. Some experts say that this is even more important than making a blot or blockade in the form of a prime. At the beginning of the game, don't try to occupy the ace point. Let your checkers move out for the hitting or anchoring and leave the ace point hitting for the final stages of the game.
The bar point is also very important. However try to occupy the equity points early in the game. There are 4th and 5th points on both sides of the game. Your decision regarding doubling is a match-winning or losing parameter. You have to know when to issue a double or when to decline or to issue a redouble in this game of backgammon. Keep in mind that the break-even points of a double are 25 percent. If you're trailing in a game, doubles can bring about a dramatic change in the game.
If you don't have anything to lose, then it's time to redouble, such as in the second game of a third game match when you have conceded the first game. Anchoring is always preferable to restrain the movement of your opponent. If your opponent sets up an anchor, then it is best to retaliate with an anchor of your own, but this must be done at the stage where you are trailing.
